I was looking forward to this because I have read the book and was looking forward to getting some more tips about typography and how to set out lots of type for a book I’m creating. Although I enjoyed the lecture I don’t think I took as much away from it as I thought I would as I think he focused too much on what was already in the book. However I did learn that printing a book in different languages is really difficult because you have to re think the order and layout for the pages as words can either be longer or shorter in different languages and this can mean that the illustrations don’t fit the content.
Simon O'Rourke - Illustration to tree carving!
I really enjoyed this speaker, which I was surprised at because I only went to this because my friends wanted to go to it. I liked learning about how he got into tree carving because it is a bit of a weird direction to take after university and I thought it was interesting to learn how the skills he learnt at university where transferable to different areas. He also gave some good tips about how much to change clients for work and how he started his own business, since he wanted to do what he really enjoyed, and this is something I’m considering to do in the future.
Jack Little - Working in creative publishing abroad
I have never thought about working abroad, but since I have become friends with the Erasmus students I have started to think it would be good to work in a different country for a year to compare the different styles and the different work environments. I though Jack gave some good advice about just moving away and getting stuck into life in a different country, however I think I would plan it a bit more. But I do feel this is something that I will consider doing in a couple of years.
