Ross Collins

Ross Collins is an illustrator who was born in 1972 in Glasgow. From a young age he always liked drawing and in 1994 he graduated from the Glasgow school of art with a first in illustration. In 1994 he won the MacMillan children’s book prize. He moved to London for two years where he experimented and refined his style. He then moved back to Glasgow where he now spends his time writing and illustrating children’s books.
As well as illustrating he also works doing character animation.
I like his work its very eye catching and I think there’s a sense of humor behind it which it what draws me into the images more. Even thought the titles of the books have a dark theme to it the colours on the cover are still bright and I like the juxtaposition of this. There is little pattern which keeps the eye on the main object.

Scott McCloud

Scott McCloud was born in 1960 in America and is a famous cartoonist. He has written books such as understanding comics and making comics. He studied illustration in Syracuse University where he graduated in 1982. In 1984 he created the science fiction series zot!
I know very little about comics as when I  was younger I never read them and never liked them so to have to look at this artist to me doesn’t inspire me as it doesn’t connect with me. I think he is very good at drawing and to people who like comics they would probably love his work yet I don’t. I don’t want to create comics or read them, however I think in future it would be nice to create something within the same layout style of a comic as they are very eye catching and have a link with pop art which is something I like, but as an artist I don’t really like his work.

Peter Fowler

Peter Fowler is a welsh artist born in 1969 who is most famous for his toys called monster. He is a freelance illustrator who focuses on his monster collection which is inspired by animals, music and folklore. His art work is very unique in style and looks very postmodern and cartoony. The ‘monsters’ which peter fowler have created all live on monsterism island again a place created by peter fowler. The ‘monsters’ all have specific traits and peter fowler has set different levels of monsterism. These toys are very popular which he makes in his own company.
As well as creating toys he has also worked on adverts which has aired in the UK and japan< his most famous advert was the kia piccanto car advert.
I don’t really like the work of Peter Fowler I think it is al to bright and it looks very 60’s which is an ear I don’t really like. The repetition of the bright colours and the psychedelic feel to me is very off putting; however I can see why illustrators would like this work because he is very skilled at drawing.

John Lawrence

John Lawrence is an English illustrator who was born in 1933. As well as illustrating books he has published some of his own such as this little chick which won best illustrated book of the year by the New York Times book review. As well as being an illustrator he is also a wood engraver which he learnt at the central school of art. Since graduating he as also taught in some school such as the Cambridge school of art teaching children’s book illustration.
John Lawrence as illustrated more than 200 books his most famous was watership down, but he has also illustrated works for Shakespeare.
I like how the work looks like it has been printed either using screen printing or wood engraving; it gives a really nice look. I also like how the book is mostly blue in colour with highlights or red and yellow this makes the certain parts stand out. Even though I’m not madly in love with his work I do really like the thought of using screen printing and wood engraving in the future so might look close at his work in a later time.

April Greiman

April Greiman is a graphic designer born in New York in 1948. She studied at the Allgemeine Kunstgewerbeschule in Switzerland and then the Kansas City Art Institute. She then started working as a graphic designer in New York whilst teaching as the same at the Philadelphia College of Art.
IN 1976 April moved to California and opened a graphic design studio in Los Angeles, made in space.
I like the bright colours that April uses in her work as it makes it look more interesting, I also think the way the text is on the work as the way it flows is unique. The way the images are overlaid make the work look like a collage which I really like. The fact that she has studied in different counties can be seen reflected in her work as it looks very modern and slick. I think I would use her work as inspiration in the future however I don’t think I will create work that looks similar to hers.

Ian Pollock

Ian Pollock was born in Cheadle in 1950, where he went on to study. He went to the Manchester College of art and design then in 1970 went to Manchester polytechnic. After he graduated he went to the royal college of art and in 1976 became a freelance illustrator.
Since becoming a freelance illustrator he has publishing books such as ‘the miracles of Christ’ and ‘beware of the cat’.  As well as publishing book Ian Pollock has also produced posters for the royal Shakespeare Company. He work often appears in magazines and newspapers due to its style.
In 1984 Ian Pollock published a cartoon version of king lear, the reason for this was to make Shakespeare accessible to all ages as when Ian was in school he didn’t connect with the works of Shakespeare and hoped a cartoon version would encourage children to enjoy and read it more.
in 1997 he was commissioned to create stamps for the bicentenary of Mary Shelleys birth.
I like the idea of designing stamps as I feel that when you get a letter the stamp it usually the only colour seen and it catches the eyes attention so I would like to try and create a few when I’m older also the fact that they are so small would incorporate problems of there own which I think would be fun to overcome. Overall I think Ian Pollocks illustrations are nice but again they are not the type of thing I would want to create and I doubt I would get inspiration form his illustrating’s but I would like to look at the stamps he has created.

Jonny Hannah

Jonny Hannah was born in the kingdom of fife and studied illustration at Liverpool art school. He graduated in 1998 and since then as worked in the majority of the illustration fields, including working on the animation ‘The man with the beautiful eyes’ which aired on channel 4, this animation then went on to win numerous numbers of BAFTA.
As well as working on animations he also produces work for books and posters, he experiments with screen printing and creating work for box sets. In 2001 he co-published the book ‘the captain’s alphabet.’ He has also published ‘hot jazz special’ which was shortlisted for the
2005 Victoria & Albert Museum Illustration Award.
I love screen printing but I don’t really like the work of Jonny Hannah the colours used aren’t the colours I like and I don’t like the overall feel of the images. I like the use of typography in the work but that’s about it, it’s not something I would look at in the future and I doubt I would work in this style ever, because the images look so dark and depressing.

Danny Brown

Danny Brown is a multimedia designer, artist and programmer born in Liverpool in 1977. Daniel has a very good grasp with flash and html coding, with this and his love for design it is not surprising that he focuses on interactive multimedia. He has been recognised since 1999 as one of the top internet designers. Like most of the web designers of his era he got his inspiration from his video games he played as a child which would explain why his work it witty and full of humour.
I really like the images of the butterfly, I like how they still have the movement in the wings and the blur adds an interesting twist as most people like to have clean crisp images. The colours of the reds/yellows and oranges contract with the pale blue background. I also like how the images are shown in greyscale as well as colour, even though I prefer the colour images. I think in the future I would look at his work again as I’m interesting in doing multimedia and expanding on what I already know about coding.

Kyle Cooper

Kyle cooper was born in 1962 and studied graphic design in America. He now works in the motion picture world where he does title sequences. In 1995 he works on the American crime film seven. This title sequence got him noticed by a lot of other graphic designers especially younger ones who took inspiration from his work and changed the way graphics would be seen and used. His work is often compared to the work of Saul Bass.
Since his work on the film seven he has been working on very large block buster films such as the mummy, spider-man and Sherlock Homes.
As well as working on films he has also worked on TV series the walking dead which is something that I have started watching at university. Until now I didn’t even think about going into doing title sequence industry even though I love watching films and TV. I really like the opening sequence to the walking dead as it looks grungy and the typography on it suits the feel of the program. Now that I now about this artist and designer I most defiantly look at his work in future as I’m now very interested in going into doing title sequences.

Joel Stewart

Joel Stewart is an illustration and artist who attended Falmouth college of art and since then he has been writing and illustrating his stories for a living. He is mostly known for working on his picture books, Dexter Bexley, and for providing illustrations for poet Carol Ann Duffy. “I am trying to make the kinds of images and picture books I thought, or half remembered existed, but couldn’t quite find when I went and looked. Of course they come out some other way again than that, but maybe one day other people will half remember them."
I think the drawings Joel Stewart creates are very vintage and cute, even though I do not think I will work in his style in the future if I was to ever have to do a project around illustration I think I would look closer at Joel Stewarts work to get some inspiration as the pictures he draws are a little creepy and surreal which is what makes me like his work more.

Michel Gondry

Michel Gondry was born in 1963, and is an award winning screenwriter, film, commercial and music video director. He has been commended for his new and unique visual style, and takes inspiration from the mise en scène.
He first started his career by making a music video for the French rock group oui oui. This video was what put his career as a music videos into full swing because soon after making his first videos he was directing music videos for the likes of
Daft Punk, The White Stripes, The Chemical Brothers, The Vines, Steriogram, Radiohead, and Beck.
As well as creating music videos he has worked with artist such as spike jonze and made a feature film called human nature which was released on 2001.

Michel Gondry's Levi's 501 Jeans "Drugstore" spot holds the record for "Most awards won by a TV commercial". I really like this commercial as the music builds up and you don’t get to see the face of the man until the end which gives a sense of secrecy and tension. The advert aslo has humour which I think would attract lots of people to the product which is the aim of the TV advert so it shows how good Michel Gondrys work is.

Hi-Res!

Hi-Res! Is a multimedia design studio and was was founded in 1999 by Florian Schmitt and Alexandra Jugovic who met at art college in 1993.Alexandra studied fine art and graphic design and Florian studied is film and music. Over the years they have combined there skills to create interesting designs in the music and post production industry. In 1999 the pair moved from Germany to London. In London the started to create websites using flash, and this lead to wide spread success, they where asked by film maker Darren Aronofsky to create a site for his film “Requiem for a Dream”.
In 2012 jagermeister went to hi-res to redesign I love what they have done for jagermiester as the photography on the website and mobile app is so striking and strong. I want to start using my photography in my graphics more than I have been doing and I want the images to be as good as the ones that hi-res have done because they are so crisp and the detail on the images are very high.

MetaDesign

MetaDesign has been one of Europe's most respected design agencies for over ten years. This company has worked on branding some very big companies such as Audi. The company was set up in Berlin in 1992 by Uli Mayer-Johanssen and Erik Speikermann and now has offices around the world such as one in san Francisco, as well as working with Audi meta design has also worked for Adobe.
I really like the work they have done for the clients especially the work they did with Audi it looks really high class and I like how the ideas have not been overly thought and complicated and I think it goes to show that simple ideas can be just as good as complicated ones. I want to start doing minimalistic work more so after reading the book by John Maeda and now that I have found this company I feel I will get some good inspiration from them.

Susan Kare

Susan Kare was born 1954 in Ithaca, New York. She is very famous for designing some of the interface which is found on the original apple Macintosh. Some of her icons she designed are still on the software used today such as the Lasso, the grabber and the paint bucket. Another element she designed for apple was the welcome face when you turned the man on and has only recently been replaced with the apple logo. She has also worked with Microsoft designing icons that are still used on the machines today such as the notebook icon and a few of the icons displayed in the control panel.
Susan Kare also designed the playing deck for the game solitaire game. I like how the bright blue stands out from the green and how you can see that the image has been drawn using pixels which makes it look quirky and different, although I do like her work I doubt I would ever use it as inspiration as it is not the style I want to work in in the future.

J. Otto Seibold

J. Otto Seibold is an illustrator of children's books he is best known for illustrating picture books. His most famous illustrations were created for the author Vivian Walsh.
One of his most famous books is the Alice in ( pop up) wonderland, which offers interactivity for the audience and this I feel is a great idea, however I think personally his illustrations look a bit creepy and I don’t really like them . I think his ideas are good and I would like to think that I could make a pop up book in the future. I think his work is very bright which would appeal to younger audiences but for me it’s just a bit too much.

Kathleen Hale

Kathleen Hale was a British artist, illustrator, and children's author. She is well known for the illustrations she created about Orlando the marmalade cat.

During the 1920s she focused on creating book jackets, posters and illustrating children’s books as well as selling her own drawings.
Orlando the marmalade cat was a story that she would tell her two sons before they went to bed and in the 1940s and 50’s the book became very well known especially due to the illustrations.
To be completely honest I don’t really like the work of Kathleen hale for me they look to old fashioned and dated, I can see why they would appeal to illustration students and children as the drawing its self is really remarkable and the texture on the fur of the cat looks really nice but this style of work is not for me and I doubt I would ever do any work in the style of this artist.

Sara Fanelli

Sara Fanelli is an artist and illustrator who was born ion Florence but studied in London. As well as illustrating books she has also written a few such as sometimes I think I am which won an award in the D&AD.
Considering that I don’t really like children’s illustration that much I do really like this artist as it remind me of the work of Teesha Moore whose work I admire so much. I like the different textures and the patterns used in the image as this adds depth. I also like the fact it looks like it has been manually put together instead of just using a computer and I think many graphic designers spend too much time on the computer and never really experiment with doing manual work. The bright colours attract me to the work and the surrealism that the work projects also attracts me to Sara Fanelli’s work, and I think I would take inspiration form this artist in the future.

Even thought this is designed for children I think the surreal feel it has attracts adults also with the bright colours it would easily stand out. I like that it is a little bit creepy and the use of different techniques used makes it far more interesting to look at.

I really like how the colour has been kept simple in this image as it means you focus on the text more, The fact that many different fonts have been used I also really like and in my work I want to start experimenting more with type. I would really like to produce a piece of work like this as it looks like it would be fun to do and it would be something different as I doubt many graphic designers would use this style.

I didn't know that sara fanelli had designed stamps until now and when looking at the artists I was looking over the over of another stamp designer and I was really drawn to this and started to think it would be really interesting to design stamps when i'm older. I like how bright the could is and it would stand out a lot from the envelop. Even though I don't like the design on the stamp that much i'm glad i've seen a stamp that doesn't look boring, it looks like to would capture peoples attention and that is something I want my work to do.

Lauren Child

Lauren Child is an English author and illustrator. She is best known for writing the Charlie and Lola books. The books where realised in 2000 and won the Kate Greenaway Medal, the same as Shierly Hughes.
From an early age she was surrounded by art as her father was head of art at Marlborough college.

I like how the illustrations use collage to give pattern and texture to the work as this lifts the images and stop them looking flat, it also adds a nice break up to the pictures as otherwise they would have been block colour. However I don’t like how the eyes and the hair all start to over lap each other, however I can see how the drawings would appeal to the younger audience .

The Designers Republic

The Designers Republic is a group of graphic designers, founded on July 14, 1986 by Ian Anderson, and based in Sheffield. It is known for its anti-establishment aesthetics. There company shut down in 2009. The worked with brands such as Coca-Cola and Orange as well as PlayStation games designing sleeves and covers for some of the most popular games like GTA. They have also designed Cd's sleeves for the ministry of sound. In 1987 the company designed the cover for the band age of chance, titled "Don't Get Mad... Get Even! (The New York Remixes)" this sleeve was in the top 100 best record cover of all time by Q in 2001.
I like the work they have created because it is bright and vibrant in style and looks like the people who created it had fun doing it and this is reflected in there work. It looks a bit futuristic and there looks like they have been inspired by Japanese work, which personally I don’t like as much.

Barnbrook

Barnbrook is a creative design studio located in London, over the years it has become increasingly popular and is now one of the best known studios in Britain. The company is a mixture of graphics and motion graphics therefore it is very visually strong and has worked on many different briefs for clients such as the BBC. The company has also created work for books; CD covers, websites and fonts, and currently releases the fonts they make to be used worldwide. In 2007 there work was exhibitions in the design museum in London.
As well as working for big companies like the BBC Branbrook also works with a lot of charitable organizations such as the British heart foundation and created an advert from them to promotion what the charity can offer people suffering with heart problems. I like how the camera angles around the heart in the center of the screen and how the fonts are all different which could link with how different people would relate to heart problems. I haven’t done any work with motion graphics but would like to start and feel that this advert is the type of style I would aim towards.

Yugo Nakamura

Yugo Nakamura was born in japan and is today considered the leading web designers of japan. He likes to ad humor into the work he creates and likes to create his work using his hands which explains the amount of interactivity his work involves for the users. In 2007 he won the Tokyo Interactive Ad Awards.
I like the interactivity that the features offer as it is little touches such as the moving colour boarders which will make the website popular and will therefore make people return to the page to see if there is anything else new to play with that has been added. I also like how there are noises as it adds another dimension to it and stops it being flat. With the clay work I like how it still looks rough and not as perfect as the other work as it makes it seem more real, I have always been interested in web design and the coding behind the features on pages and I’m glad I have had the chance to look through Yugo Nakamuras work.

Neville Brody

Neville Brody is an English graphic designer, typographer and art director. He studied fine art and graphics through is life but has always had a keen interest in typography. During his time at college his tutors said his work was not good enough for commercial use as is was too safe and not experimental enough. In 1977 the punk ere was sweeping thought London and inspired Neville Brody to create a series of stamps with the queens head on the side and this nearly got him kicked out but this set up his style for the future. He then moved into creating music covers for bands. As he has a love for typography he helped co-found the company FontWorks and designed a number of typefaces for them.
I like the pop art feel the Neville Brody puts in his work however it always seems to have a twist and looks a bit darker. I also like the effects he puts on his images to make them stand out from other graphic designers, however the typefaces he has used I don’t really like much as they seem to structured for me and I like it when they look hand draw as it adds more personality.

Why not associates

Why not associates has been running for 25 years creating a wide range of projects and different media types such as projects, including corporate identity, digital design, motion graphics and television commercial direction, editorial design, environmental design, publishing, and public art. They create work for many different clients including the government. They have worked with very large companies such as Nike, Virgin and the BBC.  No matter who the clients’ are the work is known for pushing the boundaries and experiments to suit the clients needs.
Since looking at this group of graphic designers I have noticed they did the TV adverts for the BBC dickens season. These are made and look so beautiful as they have combined the feeling of the old with the modern technology to create a perfect balance to advertise one of the great literary figures. The adverts use textures that look like paper and then the change and transform into video clips and this affect is really lovely and looks delicate which relates to the characters in Great expectations.

Vaughan Oliver

Vaughan Oliver is a British Graphics design and typographer, who has worked in 23 envelope and v23 where they produced many designs for the record label 4AD and between 1982 and 1998 created many different covers for bands such as dead can dance and pixies.  Vaughan Oliver is said to have inspired many different artists as his covers where so popular and had a big impact of the music culture, as his work is very punk looking. And with his use of experimentation has created some of the best album covers.
The bright colours and the use of the typography really makes the covers stand out, the colours are often clashing which links into the decade these where created in. They have been layered up so they are never boring and there is always something more to look at and to discover about the album covers. I also like how the typography is not just going across the image horizontally but vertically as well as this gives another dimension to the work.

The Chase

The chase is a design agency which has offices in Manchester, Preston and London. They focus on working with corporate identity, branding and packaging but have do work in other subject fields.  They have worked with companies such as M&S, BBC wildlife trust, original source and Manchester dogs home.
I really like the work the Chase have created over the years and the fact that they use all different techniques means there work stays creative and up to date. I particularly like the work they have done for Manchester dogs home as I got both of my dogs from there and go there regularly to give money to the charity. I like how the photo’s have been taken and the fact that it uses an interesting angel on street art helps to catch the viewers attention. I also like how they have given the dogs human characteristics as this creates a greater sense of sadness and I think more people would be able to relate to the images because of this.

When looking through there work I noticed that they had designed the bottle for original source, this is a brand of shower gel which I sometimes buy and to learn that the people who created it was the chase I was surprised by how i've seen so much of there work already and still didn't really know a great deal about them.
I really like the use of type on the bottles as the text is not just going horizontal across the bottle but it also goes vertically and I think it fits the product and the demographic well.

This company is someone I think I will look back through a lot because there style of work I feel is similar to my own and I would like to think that someday my work would be as good as theirs.

The work they did for the garden lighting company is very simple but this adds a lot of elegance to it and from the start of the year we where always told that reduction is sometimes the key to great design and I think the work sums up that. I really like the bright colours used in the work and think that its really eye catching even though it is a very simple idea.

The I feel fruity work is another piece of work I like because it has a sense of humour and I sometimes think that people can take themselves and design to seriously and its nice to have a laugh, which is a really good way of getting people to remember your design.
Their work always looks clean and really well put together and I like how they don't take everything to seriously, I would like to think that one day I could be working in this company.

David Hughes

David Hughes was born in Twickenham in 1952 and from a very young age knew he wanted to get in to the art and design side of life. In 1970 he left Twickenham Technical College where he studied illustration and proceeded to produce a series of etchings inspired by a piece of jazz music by Charlie Parker. He then moved onto drawing for the daily expresses cookery page. After taking time out to get to understand what he was really interested in doing he got a job at Granada TV as a Graphic designer where he stayed for 5 years before leaving to work as a freelance illustrator.

One of my favourite quotes from David Hughes is, “I am a graphic designer who happens to illustrate” I like how he does not put himself into one box and that he experiments with his jobs to be sure he is doing what he loves, which in my eyes has paid off as he produces some of my favourite pieces of illustration. In the image below I like how it looks like mix media has been used as it gives a surreal affect to the image. The bright pop of red draws the eye in and creates interest. Although I am not studying illustration I would love to be able to produce a piece of work like this.

I like the fact it looks old and vintage. There is a limited amount of colour used in the picture which is another reason why I think I like it so much. I like how to can see every detail of the line work in the piece as it looks like a lot of time and effort has gone into creating it but at the same time gives it an edgy feel and makes it look like its rebelling the normal stereotype of illustration.
This work reminds me of Sara Fanellis but with less colour and brightness used, it has the same technique of using mix media to create depth and I hope that I can create a feel of work manually like this as it would be something different to add to my portfolio.

On this piece I really like the typography which has been used as it suits the feel of the image. even though it has been placed in the background suggesting it has less importance its still readable. I like the idea of using hand written text on my work as it will give it a lot more personality. I feel that my style of work would mean I could create something like this as the lines don't look perfect and it looks like David has enjoyed creating this work.

David Carson

David Carson is an American graphic designer and art director, who is famously known for his typography especially when working at the magazine Ray Gun. Whilst working at the magazine it was his job to get the layout of the magazine just right. His work was very popular in the 1990’s when the grunge style was at its peak. In 1995 he left the magazine in the pursuit to start his own business which was a success as after 3 years he had worked with the likes of Pepsi cola, Ray Ban and Nike.
I had never heard of David Carson until now but I have fallen in love with his work. I love the randomness it has and the way it makes you look into the image, I also like the way the text is on the page and can understand way he is famous for his typography. The colours used are eye catching either because they are so bright or because they are dull and unexpected. the composition of each image is different and always ensures you look at the work.

Tomato

Tomato is a group of artists, designers, musicians and writers, who work on multi media projects. The company was founded in 1991 and since then have gained more clientele and built up a reputable business. As the have people who specialise in many different fields it makes there work more interesting and has given them the opportunities to work on projects which aren’t just graphical, they have delve into projects in publishing, advertising  fashion, public installations, music, television, film and graphic design, as well as putting on exhibitions and live performances.
One of my favourite pieces of work done by tomato is the underworld barking films. I love the vivid colour on the flowers and who you can see the life cycle of the plants and how the colours change with the cycle. I also like how the film has been played backwards to give a different perspective.

eBoy

Eboy are a group of pixel artists who have nicknamed themselves the god fathers of pixel, they where founded in 1997 and are from Germany and U.S.A.  The group creates art work mostly for websites but also for magazines and adverts. The company has worked on projects for very large companies such as Coca-Cola, which shows how strong there work is. The art work the group create has a strong emphasis on old video games, as you can see in there work as the pixels give block colour this relates back to many peoples childhoods which could be why there work is becoming increasingly popular, in contrast to other digital work where the lines are as smooth as can be made with the hope that the pixels are hidden, eBoy relish in the old school look.
 “H
andling pixels is fun and you are forced to simplify and abstract things, which is a big advantage of this technique."

For me the work is over crowded and to busy for me to look at however I do like how they are being so different and creating work which pushes the boundaries.

Ronald Searle

Ronald Searle was a British artist who is most famous for creating the St Trinians School with Geoffrey Willans. He studied for 2 years at Cambridge college of arts and technology, whoever in 1939 he had to give up his dream of being an artist as it was obvious that war was about to take place and Ronald Searle enlisted in the royal engineers. In 1942 he was taken a prisoner of war and was forced to work of the death railway. Even though he was now a prisoner of war this never stopped him drawing and documenting what he saw, many of these drawings appear in his book Ronald Searle: To the Kwai and Back, War Drawings 1939-1945 in which he talks about what it was like to be a prisoner of war. He continued to work of the St Trinians books as well as his book on cats before moving to Paris where he started designing for the cinema and worked on films such as Monte Carlo or bust.
I like how the drawings are mostly in black and white it gives a child like feel to them, I love the drawings of cats he has created as they have so much character and humor to them which appeals to me as I’m sure it does to many other people. And even though I don’t want to go do the illustration path I still would use his work for inspiration.

Pentagram

Pentagram is a design studio which was founded by Alan Fletcher, Theo Crosby, Colin Forbes, Kenneth Grange and Mervyn Kurlansky in 1972 in west London since then they have opened offices in America and Berlin. The foundation of the company was that everyone was to be equal to everyone else because of this premise there are no executive officers or CEOs, everyone has a say and they believe this to be the best way of generating ideas and keeping there ideas fresh and up to date. As well as working in graphic design the firm also work with companies to produce an identity, companies such as citibank and united airlines, they have also worked on areas to do with architecture, interior design and product design, including product design for Tesco, Boots and Nike. Pentagram have also worked with the co-operative brand and this lead to them winning a silver award at the design business association. I like how they do not just focus on graphics and that they have branched out to go into architecture and interior design as both of these where fields I wanted to go into when I was studying at college and knowing that there is a company that does everything I’m interested in means that I could in the future be a graphic designer who works on briefs which include an element of interior design and architecture.

Saul Bass

Saul bass is an American graphics designer, title designer and film maker. His most famous pieces of work are the film posters he has created through out his life time including the poster for the film ‘The shining’. He has worked on films with some of the greatest filmmakers of all time including Alfred Hitchcock. As well as working on films bass has also created logos for many of the big companies in America such as AT&T’s bell and globe logo.
His work mostly consists of a block colour for the background with only a few more colours in the foreground which I like as it keeps it looking simple. For the twister poster I love bass’ typographical designs on all his work as it stands out and this is an area I wish to improve so will take inspiration from this. I also like the way that the text looks hand draw as it adds a bit of personality to the work which you don’t always get from using a computer. The poster uses only three colours and yet still captures people’s interest, and this is the sort of look I aim to achieve in future and will therefore be looking at his work more closely.

I like how saul bass keeps the colours simple and never mixes warm colours with cold colours a this makes his work stand out and look really bright and vibrant. I want to start to use screen printing more and I think that looking at saul basses work would help a lot because it uses simple lines and shapes with limited colour and yet to get a very big impact and its hard not to like his work.

Another reason why I really like his work is because of the typography, at the moment I don't really use much in my work and I want to change that as I think type can make your work stand out if it is done correctly. I really like the font used in saul basses work as it always links in with the design, he keeps the font quite square and straight this simple look compliments the fact his work is so bold and bright and ensures that they both work well together.
